Coastal Walks Gran Canaria: 5 Beautiful Routes to Start Your Day by the Sea

Feb 19, 2026

The first rays of sunshine slip through the window of your room at Seaside Palm Beach, gently announcing a new day over the Atlantic. A morning walk along the coast feels like a quiet luxury in itself. The island is still, the sea is soft, and each step brings a sense of lightness, as though the day is beginning at exactly the right pace.

In some places, you can even walk barefoot along the shoreline, the sand cool and slightly damp beneath your feet. It’s a simple pleasure, but one that instantly brings a feeling of wellbeing.

Thanks to Gran Canaria’s wonderfully mild climate all year round, sunrise is one of the most beautiful times to experience coastal walks in Gran Canaria. Many routes run alongside some of the island’s most striking beaches, where the coastline reveals itself in its most natural, unspoilt form.

For nature lovers, the early hours offer another quiet highlight. With a little luck, you may spot birds and other wildlife as the island wakes up, adding a gentle sense of connection to your surroundings.

Five Coastal Walks in Gran Canaria for a Sunrise Stroll

Meloneras Promenade  (Paseo de Meloneras)

Paseo de Meloneras

Just a short stroll from Seaside Palm Beach, the Meloneras Promenade is ideal for a morning walk before breakfast.

The route begins near the Charca de Maspalomas, a peaceful lagoon on the edge of the dunes, where the first light of day often reflects across the water. Early in the morning, the area feels wonderfully still. If you pause for a moment, you may even see waterbirds moving across the surface.

From here, the promenade leads towards Meloneras, passing the historic Faro de Maspalomas. Standing proudly by the sea, the lighthouse has watched over this coastline for generations and remains one of the most recognisable landmarks in the south of Gran Canaria.

The walk continues to Playa de las Meloneras, creating an easy 2.4 km route accompanied by fresh sea air, soft morning light and that unmistakable feeling that the day belongs entirely to you.

  • Distance from Seaside Palm Beach: Approximately 100 m

  • Walking time to reach the promenade: 1–3 minutes

Arinaga Promenade

Paseo de Arinaga

The Arinaga Promenade, in the municipality of Agüimes, reveals a more authentic, local side of Gran Canaria. The salty sea air greets you the moment you arrive, bringing an instant sense of clarity.

The route stretches for around 3 km, starting at Playa de Arinaga. Along the promenade you’ll find outdoor fitness equipment, benches with sea views and a selection of cafés and restaurants right on the waterfront.

The scenery changes as you walk: dark volcanic rock, natural sea pools such as Soco Negro, and small details that hint at the area’s industrial past. The old lime kilns, still standing today, add a subtle historical character to the stroll.

A particularly charming finishing point is the Punta de Arinaga Lighthouse. It is small and understated, yet beautifully photogenic, especially in the soft light of early morning.

  • Distance from Seaside Palm Beach: 30 km

  • By car: 30 minutes

  • By public transport: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes

La Garita Promenade

On the coast of  Telde, La Garita invites you to a peaceful, leisurely stroll. The highlight here is Playa de La Garita, where dark volcanic sand takes on warm copper tones at sunrise.

The promenade itself is around 1.7 km long, and the Bufadero de La Garita provides the soundtrack. When the tide is high, the sea surges into rocky cavities and bursts upwards in a dramatic spray, a natural spectacle that never fails to impress.

With benches, viewpoints and quiet corners along the way, it’s easy to pause, breathe and simply watch the Atlantic. In the early hours, the atmosphere feels wonderfully local: walkers, joggers, and the first cafés opening their doors for a quick coffee or breakfast.

If you’d like to extend the experience, this is also a lovely spot for a gentle swim or a quiet moment with a book by the shore.

  • Distance from Seaside Palm Beach: 45 km

  • By car: 40 minutes

  • By public transport: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Las Canteras Promenade

Paseo de Las Canteras

The Las Canteras Promenade, around 3 km long, is one of those routes that captures the spirit of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in a single walk. Around 3 km long, it begins near the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, and from the very first step you can feel the city's energy, carried on the fresh sea breeze and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Close by lies La Cícer, the island’s most famous surf spot. At sunrise, you can watch the surfers’ morning ritual: boards under their arms, wetsuits half-fastened, slipping quietly into the water as if not to disturb the ocean.

Further along, Playa de Las Canteras stretches out like an endless postcard. One of its natural highlights is La Barra, a reef that acts as a protective shield. Depending on the tide, it creates a calm, almost pool-like stretch along the shore, where the early light dances across the sand.

As you continue, the promenade slowly comes to life. Cafés, ice-cream parlours, small shops and terraces open one by one. By the time you reach La Puntilla, the atmosphere feels distinctly local, with families strolling, fishermen at work and swimmers enjoying the morning sun.

  • Distance from Seaside Palm Beach: 61 km

  •  By car: 50–55 minutes

  •  By public transport: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Agaete Promenade

Playa de Agaete

The Agaete Promenade, also known as the Poets’ Walk, is a short yet delightful 1 km route that winds along the coast and connects the charming Puerto de Las Nieves with Playa de La Caleta.

One of the highlights along the way is Las Salinas de Agaete, natural sea pools that refill with each wave. The contrast between deep blue water and black basalt creates an almost hypnotic scene, especially in the morning light.

On clear days, the silhouette of Tenerife appears on the horizon, crowned by the majestic Mount Teide, a view that stays with you long after the walk ends.

  • Distance from Seaside Palm Beach: 90 km

  • By car: 1 hour 15 minutes

  • By public transport: Approximately 2 hours

Benefits of a Morning Walk by the Sea

A coastal walk in the early hours wakes the body and brings a sense of calm to the mind, far removed from traffic, schedules, and screen time. It may sound simple, but it can completely change the way your day begins.

The soft morning light helps reset your internal clock, while the fresh Atlantic air encourages deeper breathing and the release of tension. Walking stimulates circulation, eases morning stiffness and, with the steady rhythm of the waves beside you, creates a natural sense of clarity.

There is also something quietly mindful about walking by the sea at sunrise. The sound of the water, the feel of sand beneath your feet, the first colours on the horizon. When you slow down and take it in, a simple stroll becomes a small ritual, one that stays with you long after you return.

Marvel at the wildlife

The promenade is the perfect place to pause for a few minutes—give your legs and back a gentle stretch, practice mindful breathing, or even enjoy a short yoga session while gazing out across the horizon.

What to pack for Coastal Walks in Gran Canaria

For an early morning stroll, you don’t need much. A few essentials are enough to stay comfortable and fully enjoy the experience.

Light, breathable clothing allows you to move freely, and a bottle of water is always a good idea. And on Gran Canaria, sun protection is simply part of the routine, whatever the time of day.

If you’d like to capture the beauty of the morning, keep your camera or phone close. Sunrise light is soft, flattering and perfect for photographing those small details that only appear as the island begins to wake.
